When I see something, there are certain aspects of my visual experience which are there, right in front of me, and which I canโt possibly doubt. I can doubt that what I am seeing is a real, mind-independent object, or that there is any real, mind-independent world at all; but I canโt doubt that I am having certain experiences, or that these experiences have a certain character. In his Meditations, Descartes famously employed this line of thought to ground his philosophical system. Descartes had realized that he could doubt almost everything about the world, but he felt that his conscious experiences themselves possessed a kind of absolute certainty. Cogito, ergo sum: I think, therefore I am, he concluded. At least something had to exist, namely the experiences themselves. But this line of thought raises as many questions as it answers. For one thing, itโs not clear that there really is any distinct, identifiable self over and above the experiences. When I introspect, I find experiences, but I canโt find any distinct experiencer. Instead, my experiences just seem to float in an ownerless void. This is related to Humeโs famous bundle theory of the self. Hume thought that the self was just a collection of experiences, with no distinct core. Even more problematically, itโs not clear that introspection really gives us an infallible insight into our own experiences. After all, we can make mistakes about our experiences. Could I be wrong that I am experiencing the color blue right now? It certainly seems like I could. I could be dreaming, or hallucinating. Or I could just be misunderstanding my own experience. Perhaps what I am experiencing is actually a subtly different shade of blue than I think I am. Or perhaps the real nature of my experiences is something so alien and distant from my understanding that I can never truly grasp it. So, ultimately, the Cartesian quest for certainty may be misguided. While introspection can certainly give us valuable insights into our own minds, itโs not a perfect and infallible source of knowledge. There may always be some uncertainty and mystery in our understanding of the world, and even in our understanding of ourselves.
